Altruism drives high-performing training providers

Media release

Training providers believe that prioritising students’ needs and providing them with an excellent training experience are vital for achieving high performance, according to the latest research by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER).

Latest report Beyond the standard: motivators of high-performing RTOs explores what motivates successful training providers and how they incorporate these motivators into their everyday operations.

The report highlights the significance of altruistic intentions, fostering strong relationships, and embracing inclusive leadership within registered training organisations (RTOs) to achieve high performance.

Research findings also show that high performing training providers have a sense of purpose that extends beyond education and actively contribute to their communities.

NCVER Managing Director, Simon Walker, stated the research suggests that RTO leaders that consider the broader societal role of VET, including both RTOs and communities, can improve outcomes for students and industries alike.

Furthermore, the research found that the high performing RTOs that were interviewed tended to employ a transformational leadership style.

NCVER Managing Director, Simon Walker, said that "RTOs recognise the importance of building strong relationships with students and employers as a key driver of high performance. They firmly believe that by getting their relationships right, the business side will take care of itself."

Background

This research builds on recent work on VET quality and RTO performance to deliver a deeper insight into what drives RTOs to pursue excellence in student outcomes and meeting industry VET skills needs.

It sought to understand both the motivations of high-performing RTOs and how they embed those motivations into RTO operations. Several findings emerged that may inform initiatives to boost performance.
