Growth in apprentice and trainee commencements continues

The latest apprentice and trainee data from the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) show commencements grew nationally to 48 750 (or by 84.1%) in the September quarter 2021 compared with the same quarter in 2020.

“Over the last four quarters NCVER has reported notable annual growth in commencements, following four quarters of decline,” explained NCVER Managing Director Simon Walker.

“Commencements in non-trade occupations drove most of the increase in September quarter 2021, rising by 13 435 (91.6%). Those in trade occupations increased by 8800 (74.5%).

The increase in commencements was reported across nearly all industry sectors, with the largest absolute increases occurring in the construction (up 4805), accommodation (up 2845) and administrative and support services (up 2510) industries,” said Mr Walker.

Completions also grew nationally to 18 400 (or by 9.9%) in the September quarter 2021 compared with the same quarter in 2020. The highest increases were seen in the construction (up 975 or 27.8%), health care and social assistance (up 395 or 24.7%) and manufacturing (up 240 or 21.9%) industries.
