The latest data released today by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) show that the number of school students undertaking vocational education and training (VET) increased in 2023, when compared with the previous year.

The VET in Schools 2023 report shows 252 105 school students undertook VET as part of their senior secondary certificate of education in 2023, a 3.8% increase from 2022. Of these, 19 310 (or 7.7%) participated in a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship, and 232 795 (or 92.3%) in other VET in Schools programs.

All VET in Schools students were enrolled in a program. The most popular programs were training package qualifications, which accounted for 92.8% of all program enrolments. Over half of these enrolments were in Certificate II level qualifications, and about a third in Certificate III.

For school-based apprentices and trainees, the three most popular training packages were Tourism, Travel and Hospitality; Business Services; and Retail Services. For other VET in Schools students, the most popular were Tourism, Travel and Hospitality; Sport, Fitness and Recreation; and Business Services.

In 2023, about a quarter of Australian school students aged 15 to 19 participated in VET in Schools.
